A Note from the Nurse

Illness: When to stay home and why?

We know that healthy children make better learners, and we also know that school can be a breeding ground for organisms that cause illness. That reason is why it is important that we as parents follow the policy of Fostoria City Schools regarding when you are to keep your child home for illness.

Our policy regarding illness is:

  • Any child with a temperature of 100 or higher will be sent home. Please do not send your child to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours.
    • While it seems like a little Tylenol or Motrin will keep that temp down, all it is really doing is masking the illness, and your child can still infect his/her classmates.

2019-2020 Calendar and School Start Times

The 2019-2020 School Calendar has been finalized and approved. There are a few dates on the calendar that should be noted. The first being that the first day of classes for the 2019-2020 school year will be the day after Labor Day, September 3rd, once again.  Second, on December 19th and 20th we have scheduled professional development days.  These days will be used to move into the new 7-12 building.  There will be more information to come on this as we arrange for a dedication ceremony and an open house. The final date is February 14th which will be used as a make-up day for the district if more than 8 days of school are missed before then because of delays and cancellations.  Click here for a pdf version of the 2019-2020 calendar.

Additionally, an adjustment has been made in start times for the upcoming school year.  The JSHS will be starting at 7:45 am and will be in session until 2:35 pm.  The elementary building will be starting at 8:45 am and will get out at 3:15 pm.  This is for all students PK-6.  There were several factors that led to this decision - more daylight time for walkers at the JSHS as well as getting all of the elementary students on one schedule as they will be in one building.

It is too early to announce details at this point, but we are working on a plan to be able to offer before/after school opportunities in some format in order to alleviate multiple trips out to campus.  More information available in the months to come.

Student Start Up Program

The Fostoria Chamber is working to build young entrepreneurs.  They are once again hosting “Student Start Up”, which is a program for students in grades 6-12 in the Fostoria area who are interested in starting or expanding a summer business.  Through a grant, the Chamber is able to fund 10 new student start-ups.  Each successful applicant will receive $200 to start their business and as a bonus, if they turn in a report and a photo of themselves engaged in business at the end of the season, they will receive an additional $100.  Logo with post it 2 288x300“We want the process to be simple and to provide the students with the experience of running a business and not just as an employee.”  Click here for the brochure which contains the application. The application can also be found online at www.fostoriaohio.org/ssup.
