What does a School Counselor Do?

A school counselor works with ALL students. It is a school counselor’s mission to help prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s adults.  During classroom lessons with a school counselor, students at Riley and Longfellow Elementary learn the 7 Habits of Happy Kids as well as other standards that align with the ASCA standards in the areas of academic development, career development, and personal/social development. School counselors also facilitate small groups on topics such as friendship (making friends/ being a friend) and changes (adjusting to school and family changes). School counselors meet individually with students to do brief, solution-focused counseling. Some reasons students may see a school counselor could be sadness, anxiety, or difficulty paying attention. Collaborating with parents, guardians, teachers, administrators, and community members is also an important role of the school counselor. As the preschool through second grade school counselor in Fostoria City Schools, I am here to ensure that students’ academic, personal, and social needs are being met.
